“The ending change was stupid though because the ending of the book is with Paul dead and the leaders, big picture, saying it's all Quiet on the Western Front, ignoring an individual's death. Which is exactly what the movie embraces right up until the end. But the movie flips again at the end so the leaders have negotiated peace but one individual is killed in a final, unsanctioned offensive, in great detail. Suddenly, the movie is concerned about Paul the individual again... absolutely negating the title of the book.”

“It is very ironic from the beginning of the film, and you see to what degree the name of the movie doesn't at all indicate that things are calm between the Germans and the French, but it is important that through the events of the film we will live the quiet and deadly events of the soldiers on the Western Front between the Germans and”

Published reviews, not felt experience — a different question from the one above, and never mixed into the FlickFeel score.
“While not as showy as Sam Mendes’s sweeping, single-shot takes in 1917, this is remarkable, if harrowing, film-making. Moments of striking beauty – sunlight carved into exultant rays by skeletal winter trees – are almost as shocking and disquieting as the scenes of suffering.”

“War is hell and for a little over two and a half hours, All Quiet on the Western Front displays its ghastly horrors without ever venturing into voyeuristic consumption, opting instead to unsettle its audience with bleak realities and sobering truths.”
Maggie Lovitt, Collider · 100
“This is a film about the boys who don’t come home, and its story proves both deeply affecting—and surprisingly timeless.”
Matthew Jackson, The A.V. Club · 91
“Berger’s take on All Quiet on the Western Front is a searing indictment of the futility of war, one that knows the way conflict erodes the human soul and the machinery that keeps that erosion moving. Its battle scenes are as impressively staged as they are visceral to watch, despite a few hinky ropes of CGI here and there.”
Clint Worthington, Consequence · 91
“This sprawling German-language adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's classic WWI novel is a film that feels both aesthetically dazzling and full of necessary truths: an antiwar drama that transcends the bombast of propaganda mostly just because it's so artfully and indelibly made.”

Grouped by where it was written, because a considered review and a reaction typed an hour after the credits are different things. Every quote links to its source.

“I didn’t think I would like the film and ultimately did. While not as ‘true’ to the source material or themes, it does a masterful job showing and emotionally depicting through sound and sights the scale of war of that era. It’s lighter on emotional elements and depth of humanity than many war films, and that is I feel the point of the original story. But if you’re going to remake it, and do it from a relatively retrospective ‘pro-war but remove the varnish and run the tape’ perspective, then I ”

“All Quiet on the Western Front is as beautiful and poetic as it is brutal and blunt. Historically accurate, emotional, and raw, this film is easily the best war drama to arrive since "Saving Private Ryan". Although available in English over dub, watching the film in the native German language with English subtitles is the way to go. Somehow, hearing German commanding officers shouting in English doesn't have the same dramatic effect. The cinematography is amazing. Go watch it.”
