β steady β Holds one level all the way. Warm most of the way through. Marked above the line: 1 moment that made people jump, 1 that landed as a blow, 2 that gave people chills, 5 that got a real laugh.

βThe scene where Ice Cube is singing No Vaseline while it cuts to NWA's reactions was fucking awesome.β

βAlso liked how one of the first scenes was that Blood coming on to their school bus and threatening everyone. I saw that scene and I was like, "well that was a little after school special-y" and when Cube gets home he's like, "Today was fuckin' nuts, some gangster got on our bus and pulled out a gun and gave a fuckin' motivational speech." I think that was the moment I was like, I'm going to like this movie.β

βIf βComptonβ is undeniably of the moment, itβs also timeless in its depiction of how artists and writers transform the world around them into angry, profane, vibrant and singular personal expression.β
Scott Foundas, Variety Β· 90
βWithin the vigorous entertainment of Straight Outta Compton is a sharp-minded realism about the machines within the machines, the amplifiers of money and media that, behind the scenes and offscreen, play crucial roles in the flow of power.β
